Can Hearing Aids Help You Live Longer?

by | Feb 12, 2025 | Hearing Aids, Patient Resources

Each year we prioritize getting our eyesight tested, our physical health analyzed, and our teeth cleaned, but when was your last hearing test?

Protecting your hearing health won’t just help with your listening capabilities but also your balance, cognition, social skills, and more. If you need hearing aids to help your hearing, great technology can provide some great benefits to your holistic health and, according to a recent study, even help you live longer.

This study from Dr. Janet Choi at the University of Southern California sought to understand how regular use of hearing aids affected the lives of almost 10,000 participants with hearing loss challenges.

Her findings were remarkable – the patients who regularly and routinely wore their hearing aids had a 24% lowered risk of premature mortality compared to the group that didn’t wear hearing aids at all.

Untreated hearing loss has been consistently linked to several health conditions like cognitive decline, harmful falls, social isolation, anxiety, and dementia risk. With the help of top-tier hearing technology and professional audiology care, you can easily avoid some of these harmful risks.

The Study Says…

Dr. Choi, a hearing aid wearer herself, emphasizes in her study that hearing aids alone are not the one solution for living a longer life, but rather, regular use and dependency on hearing aids to help can allow for better health and that lowered risk of premature mortality.

Professional hearing care helps reconnect loved ones from the rifts in communication that hearing loss can cause, but Dr. Choi’s study found just 12% of her participants actually wore their devices outside of the study.

Regular wear of your hearing aids and taking care of your hearing health with routine ear cleanings, hearing tests, and follow-up maintenance can ensure that both your hearing health and your holistic health thrive. So, why don’t people wear their hearing aids?

When you think of hearing aids, chances are that you imagine the old, clunky devices that your parents or grandparents wore; off-white or pale pink, buzzing loudly, constantly needing fiddling with… they weren’t exactly pretty!

Modern hearing aid technology has come far beyond that negative image – today’s hearing devices are tiny and mighty, offering advanced features like Bluetooth connectivity, AI sound processing, background noise suppression, and more.

Professional hearing care and hearing aids are shown to improve your quality of life, and now the length of your life, in multiple ways. When worn routinely and taken seriously, you can hear the life you love with their assistance without worrying about the struggles of hearing loss.
